5 Steps to Turn Worry Around

Worrying about money has been so ingrained in our culture today that it has literally become an epidemic. We are not only worrying over money, we talk about it with our friends. We toss and turn all night thinking about it. We spend our energy thinking about the worst case scenario and all possible negative outcomes of the situation. It’s top of mind. All this worrying has gotten you nowhere, but you can turn this all around by changing the way you think and change what you are doing.

Here are some steps to help you.

  1. Change Your Focus

When I am super stressed and worrying about my finances I ask myself, “What am I focused on?” Usually I notice I’m really in a negative state of mind, so I ask myself, “Do I want more of this?” Usually the answer is no. See when you are focused on a negative emotion such as worry, you are creating more of what you don’t want into your life.  The key is to notice it and turn it around.

  1. Get a Mantra or Song

The reason you want a mantra or song is to help shift the energy. When you say your mantra or sing your song your energy shift and raises to a higher level. The more positive energy you tell yourself, the more you will believe and embody it. One way to do this is with a mantra, which is a positive sentence you repeat to yourself every time you begin to worry. Mine is “God is my source.” This reminds me that when I align to the energy of abundance it comes to me from many different streams of income. That I’m in control of my life and I’m choosing the experience I’m having in this moment. Do I want the experience to be pleasant full of trust and faith or stress and worry? To remind myself to say my mantra I painted a small palm tree on a sandy beach on a 3 x5 card and post it in my kitchen window.  You could write yours on a 3×5 card with color markers and put it somewhere you’ll see it often, such as your bathroom mirror, in your car or on your computer monitor.

Create a fun song to sing. When I drive I sing my song. You can make something up on the fly or think about your song and write it down so that you remember it. My song goes like this…Thank you for this day Spirit. Thank you for this day. This wonderful day, this wonderful day. Thank you for my clients Spirit. Thank you for my clients. My wonderful clients, my wonderful clients. Thank you Spirit for the opportunities to make money today.  The wonderful opportunities, the wonderful opportunities. Thank you for this day Spirit. Thank you for this day. This wonderful day, this wonderful day.

The key here is to feel good when you sing your song. You could sing it in the shower, in the car or at night when you’re getting ready for bed.

  1. Go into Gratitude

Gratitude is a higher vibration and it’s harder to focus on the negatives in life, when one is being grateful. One way to do this is to write down five positive things that happened during your day. You’ll want to do this every evening before bed for at least two weeks. In the morning when you wake up write five things that you are grateful. This will help to shift your focus and If you create an awareness of what you’re thankful for. When you have an attitude of gratitude you will naturally be more positive and can better tackle any problem with easy.

  1. Know Where You Stand

Set aside some time weekly to check your bank account and discuss your finances with your partner. Then, you don’t have to worry the rest of the week, because you know where you stand and you have deal with things.

If you don’t already one now is a good time to create a budget. A budget can serve as a real eye-opener to what you are spending your money on and it will afford you greater control over your spending habits. It will also help with the fear-of-the-unknown by giving you a firm grasp on your financial situation rather than wondering.

I taught this system to my son who is living on his own going to college and he has taught the same method to his friends. For one month or two you want to track everything you spend. First, whenever you spend money get a receipt. Second, put all your receipts in a certain spot or bowl. Third, once a week enter all your receipts onto a spread sheet.  The categories are groceries, gas, restaurant, clothes and your big bills like PG&E, mortgage or rent, internet, tv, phone. If you have bills you pay every six months or yearly you will want to take that bill and divide it by the months so you’ll know how much to save for that bill, such as DMV, insurance, taxes. By doing this you now know exactly how much you need every month to pay your bills.

  1. Build An Emergency Fund

Did you know that most people do not have a thousand dollars in their savings account? This emergency fund is in case anything unexpected happens, like having to replace your water heater. One way you can start this emergency fund is by paying the minimum on your credit cards for a few months. Another way is to cut out the luxury items. The things you don’t really need, like the morning coffee at Starbuck or the restaurants at lunch. Instead you could make your own coffee and lunch. Make it a game to see how much you can save in a month.

Inclusion, worrying is a bad habit that can be difficult to break. You may have learned to worry from your parents or to stay on top of your finances. It could be as simply as you didn’t know where all your money is goes. Now if you follow the steps above you’ll become a non-worrier with a happier attitude about life.

You’ll be able to look at your life with ease, happiness and envision what it would be like to live without the worry. Get motivated and use the tips above to see what you can change.
